Every two years Bethel University’s Department of Communication Studies offers a study abroad term in Europe.
The planning for Europe term begins a year in advance and the 2017 term has begun to take shape.
Students leave for the trip in late August, right around the same time as Bethel begins its fall semester. The journey begins in Vienna, Austria where the group spends three weeks taking German language class at the University of Vienna, living in dorms with international students from around the world.
The next stop is in Krakow, Poland where the group spends a few days visiting Schindler’s Factory and Auschwitz. From there, the group will move to a small town in northern Poland where they will meet with business and governmental leaders, as well as missionaries, high school students, and university faculty.
“My favorite part of the trip had to be staying with a Polish family, and experiencing their everyday life.” said Krista Jolivette, senior Communication student.
After exploring Poland, students travel to Germany where they spend more than two weeks taking Group Communication classes and working with refugees. After that, it’s back to Austria, where the group stays at the Schloss Heroldeck (a castle nestled in the Alps) learning about the relationship between communication and Christianity.
Students then get the chance to travel on their own, in small groups, for 10 days. Unfortunately, free travel does come to end, but it doesn’t mean the adventure is over! Students then make their way to Croatia in the the southern part of Europe, where students finish up final projects and explore the Croatian culture.
From there, students begin the whirlwind last few weeks of the trip where they hit the canals of Venice, the museums of Paris, the United Nations of Geneva, the ski slopes of Zermott, the food of Florence, and the history of Rome.
A flight from Rome brings students back to Bethel where we can hear stories and memories of their trip of a lifetime.
